Beginners Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Welcome to Next Edge Academy and our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class

Start with Standing and work your way down. The goal of the beginner series is to start getting used to the basic positions.

First work on the techniques and then the concepts from each position. Don’t feel like you need to master theses. Just have a general understanding. There is also additional information in each lesson regarding hand placement, leg placement and head placement but please just browse over this.

Please drill all the techniques and concepts from each position before moving on to the next one.

Please make sure to watch the full videos before class and don’t just watch the GIFs. This will help you alot as there is a lot of information in the full video.


Class Format

  • You will drill in Groups of 3
  • Drill for 5 minutes each
    • 1st Person Drills for 5 minutes with alternating partners, then the 2nd Person for 5 minutes then the 3rd person for 5 minutes.
  • Try the things you are working on with resistance
    • 1st Person tries for 2 minutes with alternating partners, then the 2nd Person for 2 minutes then the 3rd person for 2 minutes.
  • Drill for 5 minutes each (2nd time through trying to improve the mistakes made live.)
    • 1st Person Drills for 5 minutes with alternating partners, then the 2nd Person for 5 minutes then the 3rd person for 5 minutes.
  • Try the things you are working on with resistance
    • 1st Person tries for 2 minutes with alternating partners, then the 2nd Person for 2 minutes then the 3rd person for 2 minutes.
  • Drill for 1 minutes each (2nd time through trying to improve the mistakes made live.)
    • 1st Person Drills for 1 minutes with alternating partners, then the 2nd Person for 1 minutes then the 3rd person for 1 minutes.
  • Try the things you are working on with resistance (New Partner)
    • 1st Person tries for 2 minutes with a new partner, then the 2nd Person for 2 minutes
