Reverse De La Riva

(Re-Ver-se Day-La-He-Va)


Please work on understanding all the concepts and then pick only 3 of each to work on (3 Sweeps, 3 Passes and 3 Submissions)

  • Day 1 Concepts/Transitions (Read the Concepts – Pick 3 Transitions. Watch the full video before class)

  • Day 6 – Review – (Go over all 3 Transitions, Sweeps, Passes, Pass Counters(If available), Submissions (If available) and Combos)
  • Day 7 – Create 3 full sequences from each category

Day 1

Position Description

Reverse De La Riva was started by Ricardo De La Riva. The goal is to entangle the leg of your opponent. 


From Top

  • Strip the Grips
  • Don’t Allow them to grab the ankle
  • Grip the free leg
  • Grab the Head if you can

From Bottom

  • Establish Grips early
  • Push your Opponent away by pushing on the hips preferably
  • Back of the hand to the Ankle, you can also grip the far sleeve, ankle or pants.  If they try to grab the head you need to grab and control the far arm
  • Get them off balance
  • Don’t Allow them to grip the free leg
  • Don’t allow them to touch their controlled leg to the mat
  • Don’t let them grab your head

Head Positioning

From Top

  • Keep your Head up
  • Don’t allow them to grab your head or collar

From Bottom

  • Not Super important from bottom
  • Don’t allow them to grab your head 

Leg Positioning

From Top

  • Keep your legs staggered with your butt down in an athletic stance. 
  • Keep your knee pointed out

From Bottom

  • Use the leg to hook around the near leg so your right leg to their right leg
  • Use the other leg on the hip, leg, chest or bicep


From Top

  • Control the pants at the knees
  • Look for underhooks

From Bottom

  • One arm Grip at the Shin, Heel, Ankle or Pant Leg
  • Grip the belt
  • Grip the collar 
  • Grip the Sleeve
  • Grip the Collar and sleeve 
  • Grip the Cross Sleeve


From Top

  • Don’t allow your weight to come forward 
  • When passing choose to stay super tight or super long

From Bottom

  • Pull them in close to you before the sweep
